Luka Modric has admitted to Sky Sports that he did not expect that Harry Kane would make such an impact for Tottenham when he used to train with the first-team, but insisted that many of the attributes required were already there.
Modric was coming towards the end of his time at White Hart Lane when Kane was starting to receive chances in the first-team. And it would not be until the 2014/15 campaign – two years after the Croatian had swapped the Premier League for Real Madrid – that Kane would start to become a regular fixture in the Spurs side.
Since then, the 23-year-old has established himself as one of the finest strikers in England, scoring 65 league goals in the last three campaigns alone.
And Modric has confirmed that he was always confident about the forward’s future once he had seen him in training, but conceded that he did not see things going so well.

“At the time I couldn’t say that he will be what he is today, but what I saw at the time was a high work rate, he was working like crazy, like he is doing today,” he told Sky Sports.
“With that work ethic, and that quality, he is what he is today. Hopefully he continues this way.”
The disappointing thing for Tottenham fans is that they have seen the likes of Gareth Bale and Modric move to the Bernabeu in recent years, when perhaps their presence in the current team would be the factor that would elevate them further, into genuine title contenders at this stage of the campaign.
And of course, it would have been practically impossible to convince either to stay put in the hope that the current side would be put together, but had they been able to, Mauricio Pochettino would surely have had the team that would have denied Leicester the title last year and would have certainly rivalled Chelsea this time around.
