The BBC Sport pundit is unconvinced by the Brazilian, who completed a shock return to Stamford Bridge on Deadline Day.

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has told BBC Sport that Antonio Conte has put himself under added pressure by re-signing David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian completed a surprise return to Stamford Bridge on Deadline Day, having spent two seasons with the French champions, where he won a total of nine trophies.

His three years in West London between 2011 and 2014 saw him become a firm favourite with Blues fans, albeit due to his personality rather than his actual performances on the pitch.

Despite his critics, former boss Jose Mourinho still managed to broker a £50 million deal (Sky Sports) to take Luiz to the French capital – the highest fee ever paid for a defender in world football.

But many fans were nevertheless shocked to see the club go back in for the defender, and Sutton believes the decision to bring him back may well be something of a gamble for Conte during his first season in charge.

Speaking during BBC Sport’s Transfer Deadline Day coverage, Sutton said: “I am not sure about David Luiz, Antonio Conte has not put a foot wrong so can we question his judgement? Where will he play?

“He is a maverick type, I am not so sure about him defensively. Conte has put himself under pressure with this one.

He added: “There are players out there who would be more consistent that Luiz, I would rather go for steady – it is a gamble. He is a talent, can Conte get the best out of him?”

The Premier League is currently in the middle of an international break, but the 29-year-old could well make his second debut away to Swansea City on September 11th.
