Luis Suarez has admitted that he’s absolutely delighted for former Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson.
Henderson is set to become the first Reds captain in 30 years to have led Liverpool to a domestic league title.
The Anfield club hadn’t reigned supreme in England since 1990 before this week, when Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 to confirm Jurgen Klopp’s side will be Premier League champions.
Some Liverpool fans will forever be disappointed that Suarez and Steven Gerrard failed to win the title back in 2014.
But the Uruguayan has revealed that he’s over the moon for Henderson – the only current player on Merseyside to have played alongside him – and shares what he told him earlier in the season.
Suarez told Liverpool’s website: “When he lifted the trophy [the Champions League], the dream is done but this season I [will be happy to] see him lifting the [Premier League] trophy because he is a really good person. I speak sometimes with him and I said to him, ‘You have a really good chance this season’ and he is so excited.
“We watch some [Liverpool] games when we can and we see that Jordan, he is the captain from the midfield. He speaks a lot and for his teammates this is so important, when they have confidence with the captain. For me, Jordan is one of the best captains in Liverpool’s history.”
Henderson, a £20 million signing in 2011, has well and truly established himself as a Liverpool legend.
Skippering the club to a sixth Champions League title last season was special, but the Premier League is much more special for so many fans, given the 30-year gap.
