Luis Suarez is set for an emotional return to Liverpool tonight.
Luis Suarez has told The Guardian that he isn’t expecting a hostile reception from Liverpool fans tonight.
Barcelona visit Anfield for the second leg of tonight’s Champions League semi-final, with the Spanish side bringing a 3-0 aggregate lead to Merseyside.
Suarez, who spent three and a half years at Liverpool, opened the scoring against Jurgen Klopp’s side at Camp Nou last week and celebrated the goal.
Some Reds fans raised an eyebrow over the Uruguayan’s celebration last week, but Suarez, who says he won’t celebrate at Anfield this evening if he scores, isn’t expecting to be jeered by his former fans.
He told The Guardian: “I think there will be more applause for me than whistle. If people want to whistle and that makes them happy but I think there will be more who are happy and grateful.
“I scored and celebrated with my fans. Now I say sorry. I’m very thankful to Liverpool, to the fans and the club and obviously if I score I won’t celebrate it the same way.”
Klopp’s side are massive underdogs to reach the final. If Barcelona score first, Liverpool would then have to score five to advance.
It’ll be fascinating to see if Suarez gets the better of Virgil van Dijk again. The Barca striker got the run on the big Dutchman last week to slide home the opener, but Van Dijk will be out to silence him tonight.
