Luis Garcia praises ‘special’ Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez

Newcastle United recorded a comfortable win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday.

Luis Garcia has interestingly stated that Newcastle United’s Ayoze Perez ‘deserves a try’ in Spain’s national squad as he hailed him as a ‘special’ player.

The 25-year-old starred for Rafa Benitez’s side at the weekend by scoring during their 2-0 win against the Premier League’s bottom-of-the-table club Huddersfield Town.

Perez has never represented Spain’s senior side, with the versatile attacker only playing for the under-21’s during the early part of his career.

Speaking to Goals on Sunday on Sky Sports Premier League (24/02/2019 at 12:25 pm), former Spain international Garcia was asked whether Perez deserves a call-up amid talk.

“It’s a difficult one at the top because we have been struggling having different strikers, with, Rodrigo, Costa and Morata being the ones [playing in those positions] ” Garcia told Sky Sports PL.

“But he [Perez] is doing a great job and he definitely deserves a try because he has been amazing. It’s not easy on a team that has been on the re-build and doesn’t have any help with Rafa Benitez [seemingly referencing to lack of money/transfers].

“And, to be honest, everytime he gets on the pitch, he delivers something special. He’s a very technical player and he knows how to move.”

While Perez is not an out and out striker, he can play in various positions in the final third, with Rafa Benitez utilising him behind the main man up top.

Over the course of the season, he has scored four goals and supplied one assist in 26 Premier League matches [transfermarkt], but it needs to be remembered that he doesn’t play in a free-flowing attacking side.

Added with that, Benitez has had to deal with a lack of investment in his squad in recent seasons, but the recent addition of Miguel Almiron has certainly added another dynamic to Newcastle’s forward line.

If Perez were to get called up to Luis Enrique’s squad, it would be interesting to see where he would play him, whether he would be deployed out wide, up front or in a more natural position in behind the striker.
