Luis Figo believes Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo could play for Barcelona one day.
Luis Figo famously moved from the Nou Camp to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2002, marking one of the most controversial transfers of all time.
The Portugal legend crossed the Clasico divide after Real Madrid paid his £37 million buyout clause, which was then a world-record transfer fee.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently won the Europe’s Best Player award for the second time, is believed to have a £1.25 billion release clause, yet Figo, speaking to the Portuguese sports paper Record, believes the superstar could still replicate his case from 14 years ago.
“We are in a free market,” the 43-year-old told the Record. “If there is a termination clause, anything can happen.”
Figo also opened up on his move to the capital and revealed the interest from Madrid was originally used in view of a better contract at the Catalan club.
Figo added: “The first reason was for Real was the recognition by the president of Real Madrid.”
“So things were getting more serious and I received the offer and I reported it [to Barcelona] with a view to improving my contract.”
Even Ronaldo himself has refused to rule out playing for Barcelona in the future.
When asked in December about leaving Madrid and joining the Spanish champions, Ronaldo insisted that it would be “very complicated” but added “there are no certainties in football,” as quoted by The Guardian.
It seems highly unlikely Figo’s claim will become a reality, but if it was to the switch would undoubtedly go down as the most momentous and astonishing in football history.
