Liverpool are considering a move to sign Gelson Martins, The Mail report.

Martins has a 52 million Euros (£45m) release clause in his Sporting Lisbon contract and signing the winger won’t be easy, but he could be worth it.

The 22-year-old is a player backed by Portugal legend Luis Figo, who has tipped him for the very top.

Figo was quoted by Mais Futebol last month stating: “I just hope he can have the happiness of having a fantastic career, that he can win titles, be happy and have a bright future. The talent is already brilliant.

“Can he get to Barcelona or Real Madrid? I’m no scout, but if he continues to work like this and grow as a player, he can play on any team.”

Martins is an alternative to Mohamed Salah for Liverpool, with Roma so far holding firm over the Egyptian winger.

The winger scored six goals and provided nine assists in 32 appearances for Sporting last season.

Liverpool have had a rocky start to the transfer window, with Roma unwilling yet to deal on Salah and a bungled chase of Virgil Van Dijk.

Martins would arrive with a lot to prove, and would hopefully fare better than Lazar Markovic has since his move from the Primeira Liga in 2014.
