Luis Enrique didn’t hold back after Paris Saint-Germain were stunned 2-1 by Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League, calling the result “rubbish football” following a last-minute Luis Suarez winner.
The Spanish coach’s reaction came after his team dominated much of the contest but were punished by Suarez’s dramatic late strike at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Sporting’s victory complicated PSG’s hopes in Group E, leaving the reigning French champions’ qualification bid hanging in the balance on their final matchday.
Suarez’s brace, including the decisive goal deep into stoppage time, ensured Sporting took all three points despite PSG’s statistical superiority.

Luis Enrique blasts the style of play after defeat
Enrique told Canal+ France that the outcome did not reflect what he saw on the pitch, and he was frustrated by how the match unfolded.
““This was rubbish football, in my opinion. The result is disappointing, it’s unfair, it’s a shame because I only saw one team throughout the entire match,” Enrique said.
He added: “We were superior to our opponent, who are a good team and know how to defend, but we were far superior. It’s very disappointing because it’s so unfair to talk about football right now. Football is rubbish to me.”
The PSG coach’s comments reflect a sense of disbelief after PSG’s dominance in possession and attacking stats failed to translate into a favourable scoreline, and instead culminated in a heartbreaking defeat courtesy of Suarez’s late intervention.
Luis Enrique says football can be ‘unfair’
Enrique continued to vent his frustration in the post-match press conference, pointing to the unpredictable nature of the sport.
“We lost because football is a s_____ sport. There are incredible nights when you’re a coach, but football can be very unfair,” Enrique admitted.
The defeat leaves PSG needing a positive result in their final Champions League group match to secure automatic qualification and avoid the playoff round in February.
Sporting’s late victory also boosted their own European hopes, making for dramatic twists as the group stage nears its conclusion.
