Jamal Lewis was shown a red card last night after taking too long to take a throw-in for Northern Ireland.
Ian Baraclough’s side lost 2-0 to Switzerland in their FIFA World Cup qualifier against the central European side. Yet the game took an unusual decision just 35 minutes in after Lewis was shown a red card.
The Newcastle United defender received a second yellow card for time-wasting in the 37th minute. Switzerland would then go on to win 2-0 in what was a huge blow for Northern Ireland’s World Cup hopes.
Indeed, it was a strange decision given both the nature of the booking and the timing of the incident. After all, red cards are rare in the opening halves for games, let alone ones for time-wasting.
The 2020 £15m Steve Bruce signing is regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s most exciting prospects. Yet it was a surprise to all those watching that Lewis was shown a red card for something as simple as time-wasting in the first half.
Yet the decision stood, and Switzerland were able to make the most of the event with two unanswered goals.
Newcastle fans can’t believe why Lewis received a red card
