Glen Johnson has claimed that Manchester City are much closer to Liverpool than their 21 points gap suggests, as he told Soccer Saturday (11/07/20 at 12:45 pm).

The former right-back says that Liverpool aren’t a team who are 21 points ‘better’ than their rivals, as he stated that Jurgen Klopp’s side have been ‘luckier with injuries’ this term.

Last season, both Liverpool and City ran each other to the ground and very close in a pulsating title race, but this time around, Klopp’s men have been utterly dominant.

Prior to Liverpool and City’s games yesterday, Johnson was asked by Soccer Saturday host, Jeff Stelling, whether Pep Guardiola’s men are closer to the Merseyside club than the points gap suggests.

“Yes, I do,” Johnson told Sky Sports. “As Merse [Paul Merson] touched upon it earlier, City can blow teams away and make it look very, very easy and they can embarrass the best teams out there.

“I just think they need to try to keep the core of their team fit for them to maintain some sort of consistency because on their day they can beat anyone. I don’t think Liverpool are 23 [21] points team better than City.

“It’s just they have been luckier with injuries. They have been super consistent whereas City actually have the ‘wow’ factor in the way they can turn it on for 90 minutes.”

There’s no doubt that City have more depth in quality than the newly crowned Premier League champions, but the up and coming transfer window is going to be vital as to what happens next term.

Added with that, if Guardiola’s side are banned from Europe then it’ll make their already strong squad even tougher to play against on the domestic scene because they will be fresher.
