Leeds United are on the verge of promotion to the Premier League after beating Barnsley 1-0 at Elland Road on Thursday evening.

Having seen Brentford beat Preston North End 1-0 on Wednesday, Leeds knew they needed to pick up all three points and push themselves closer to the finishing line.

A Yorkshire derby faced Leeds as Barnsley arrived at Elland Road, and the Whites were made to work very, very hard for their three points.

Patrick Bamford’s first-half cross was diverted in his own net by Michael Sollbauer, and that proved to be the winner.

Leeds struggled for fluency in the second half as Tyler Roberts, Helder Costa and Jack Harrison were all substituted, and Barnsley will feel they could and should have got something.

They had twice as many shots as Leeds, which few teams can say this season, but it mattered for little as Leeds ran out 1-0 winners.

Leeds are now just one point away from promotion, with their 16-year exile from the Premier League set to end – and a former top flight hero has had his say on Twitter.

Lucas Radebe was a Leeds legend in their Premier League days, and he was a rather excited figure after the final whistle blew on Thursday.

The South African noted that he could feel the excitement simmering at full time, and there is no doubt that Leeds are a Premier League team as they close in on promotion.
