New Arsenal signing Lucas Perez has told the club’s official website that he ‘really appreciated’ former Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes.
Perez became the Gunners third signing of the summer earlier this week as he completed a move from Deportivo La Coruna in Spain.
He arrives to add much-needed competition and quality to Arsene Wenger’s forward line, which was in need of reinforcements after seeing Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott struggle for form last season.
Arsenal’s Jose Antonio Reyes
He is not the first Spanish forward to make a move from La Liga to the Emirates, with Reyes having made the same switch to much fanfare back in 2004.
And Perez admits among the great Arsenal forwards, his compatriot is one he ‘really admired.’
“Well, obviously everyone knows about Arsenal’s legendary players, such as Henry and Bergkamp,” he told Arsenal Player.
“I really admired Reyes, who’s a fellow Spaniard. [There’s] Pires, Vieira too… that was a wonderful time for Arsenal and everyone knows all those players.”
Arsenal’s Jose Antonio Reyes lies on the pitch
While Perez admires Reyes, he will be hoping his time at Arsenal proves more successful than his compatriot’s proved to be.
After a bright start, Reyes faded quickly for the Gunners and ultimately ended up being something of a disappointing signing for Arsene Wenger.
The Frenchman will be praying that doesn’t prove the case with his latest purchase, with his potential future at the club likely to be heavily reliant on how his summer signings fare.
