New Arsenal signing Lucas Perez has told the club’s official website that he was first contacted by the Gunners about a possible move at the start of the transfer window, and has suggested what he will bring to the starting XI.
The 27-year-old joined the North London club in a deal worth a reported £17 million on Tuesday to become their third major signing of the summer.
Much has been made of the need for Arsene Wenger to bring in another forward to compete with first-choice striker Olivier Giroud, and he has finally sealed a deal to do just that.
Despite being completed less than 48 hours before the close of the transfer window, it appears as though the move for Perez has been in the works for some time.
The Spaniard told the club’s website that he was first contacted by Arsenal about a potential transfer shortly after the transfer window opened.
Perez said: “There was some contact when the transfer window opened. As always in football, clubs have to evaluate what they need, but they showed interest when they got in contact. Things happened more quickly towards the end of the window so it could be made official.
“I was really happy and flattered when I heard about Arsenal’s interest. I was very hopeful to get the chance to come here.”
The former Deportivo La Coruna forward, who scored 18 goals in 38 games for the La Liga side, was also quick to highlight what he feels he can bring to the Gunners squad.
Perez added: “I played as a striker for most of my career but I can adapt to any of the four positions across the front line. I prefer playing as a striker but I have no problem playing anywhere up front.
“I think I’m a pacy player. I like to link up and combine with my team-mates, playing one-twos to work a shot.”
Arsenal fans will be encouraged by his versatility and will hope that he can make an immediate and lasting impact this season.
