According to a report in the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are interested in signing Lucas from Liverpool and the fact that Rafael Benitez is in charge at St. James’ Park could put them in a good position to land the Brazilian midfielder.

Newcastle are said to be lining up a bid for Lucas, whose contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the month.

And Benitez could find that Lucas is eager for a reunion, given the 30-year-old’s past comments about the Spanish boss.

“We all know the relationship I have with Rafa, I don’t need to explain that,” he said, back in 2015 to the Independent. “If it wasn’t for Rafa I probably wouldn’t be here. Rafa was so important for me

Benitez and Lucas worked together at Liverpool earlier in their careers, and enjoyed success.

If Lucas was to move to Newcastle he would add experience and poise to the Magpies’ midfield ranks.

Newcastle are on the hunt for new additions, as Benitez looks to make sure his side are fully equipped to compete back in the Premier League.

Newcastle have made just the one signing so far this summer, with Christian Atsu joining up on a permanent basis.

However, Benitez’s side are expected to step up their recruitment drive in the coming weeks, with plenty of new faces expected to arrive at St. James Park.
