Lucas Moura: Tottenham ‘will fight for the title’, best-placed to do so since he joined

Lucas Moura has told Stats Perform – as per Yahoo – that he is confident Tottenham will fight for the Premier League title this season, claiming that Spurs are best-placed to do so since the Brazilian moved to the North London club.

Lucas, 30, remains on the sidelines through a calf injury. He has only featured twice this season, coming on as a substitute against Southampton and Chelsea and then remaining an unused sub in the 1-0 win over Wolves.

Tottenham remain unbeaten in the Premier League, winning five of their seven games and securing draws against Chelsea and West Ham. Antonio Conte has added top-quality depth, and a hard-to-beat attitude to his side.

But a tough test comes in the form of enemies Arsenal on Saturday. The Gunners sit top of the Premier League and while they are not unbeaten, they have won six of seven league games. Lucas thinks his side will fight for the title.

“To be completely honest, of all the seasons I’ve been here,this is the one where we have the best chance. This is the season when there are the most expectations. I think it’s down to the quality of the team, the coach and the group. 

“The team kept getting stronger. Of all the years I have been here, this is the season where we are closest to the title. Many teams are strong this year, we are aware of the competition. But yes, I think we will fight for the title.”

Can Tottenham really do it? They finished 22 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City last season, squeezing into fourth place ahead of Saturday’s opponents Arsenal. But Conte has changed Tottenham, massively.

But since the arrival of Conte, the gap is a whole lot closer. In the 35 Premier League games Conte has taken charge of, Conte is third, only 17 points behind City. This season, they are level on points with the Premier League champions.

So, why not? Conte has said himself that he needs three more transfer windows to challenge for the title. But if Spurs can reduce the gap from 22 points, to single digits, then it is a massive improvement – and a decent title challenge.
