Lucas Joao has said that he needed to leave Sheffield Wednesday on loan to get more game time, on Blackburn Rovers’ official website.

Joao has left Wednesday temporarily until the end of the season, with Blackburn his destination.

The Portuguese forward’s task at Blackburn will be to try and help Rovers escape the drop.

And Joao says that he is looking forward to getting started at Ewood Park, after what has been a mixed season for him so far.

“Sheffield Wednesday have a lot of strikers who have a lot of quality, so I felt I needed to move away to play more and progress,” Joao said. “Blackburn Rovers have given me this opportunity and I need to enjoy it and most importantly, play well.”

Joao has made 12 appearances for Wednesday so far this campaign, but he has only scored on one occasion.

The 23-year-old has largely been used as a substitute by Carlos Carvalhal, with other options being favoured.

If Joao had stuck with Wednesday, his chances were only set to become more limited, as the Yorkshire side have recently added Jordan Rhodes to their forward ranks.

Joao’s debut for Blackburn could come this evening, when Owen Coyle’s side take on Leeds United.
