Lucas Digne shares exactly what he told Barcelona when Everton wanted him

Everton snapped up Lucas Digne from Barcelona over the summer.

Everton defender Lucas Digne has told The Mirror that he virtually begged Barcelona to sell him when the Toffees came calling for his services this summer.

Everton needed to strengthen after bringing in Marco Silva as their new manager, with new director of football Marcel Brands charged with the task of improving the squad.

It took a while for Everton to really get going, but they did land some major signings like Richarlison, Bernard and Yerry Mina, and even solved one of their big problems.

Leighton Baines has been been a superb servant for more than 10 years now, but he is ageing and struggling physically, making a new left back an absolute must.

Eventually, Everton did land one as they snapped up Barcelona’s Lucas Digne, luring the Frenchman to Goodison Park after he spent just two years in Catalunya.

The 25-year-old has made his name with Lille, Paris Saint-Germain and Roma in recent years, but heads to Merseyside in order to establish himself with the Toffees.

Digne picked up an assist in the 1-1 home draw with Huddersfield Town last time out, and will be looking for more success against West Ham United this afternoon.

Now, Digne has told The Mirror that he virtually begged Barcelona to let him join Everton when they made their move, as they didn’t want to let him go at first – but having spoken to Silva, he pushed for a move to Everton, and eventually got his wish.

“Of course, Barca is the biggest club in the world – and everybody knows that,” said Digne. “But I came to Everton because I felt there was a very good project here. I had such a good feeling about the club that I said to Barcelona, ‘Please let me leave to go to join Everton because it’s the best thing for me and my career. In the beginning, they didn’t want to sell me.”

“But when the coach Marco Silva called me I had such a good feeling. I knew I wanted to come Goodison Park. Now I am here, I want to win a lot of games and, if it’s possible, a trophy too. This year the objective is to be better than last year and, if it’s possible, to win something,” he added.
