Lucas Digne has stated on Twitter that Everton is ‘still a loving place for me’ after he returned with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Aston Villa recorded a 1-0 win at Goodison Park, with Digne of all people supplying the assist for the only goal of the game.

After the match, Digne took to his Twitter account to send a message to his new supporters and those he used to rep only a number of weeks ago.

Everton fans will be wishing that Digne stayed on for a number of weeks because Rafa Benitez would have been out of the door and he may well have returned to the XI.

Whatever happened between the player and Benitez, it’s those Everton fans who are paying the consequences for it.

They have lost a top-quality player during a period of time when they are struggling and all involving a manager they didn’t want in the dugout in the first place.

Not only that, those in the Goodison Park boardroom sanctioned the deal to Villa knowing everything around it.

Yet, weeks later sacked Benitez from his role, and in truth, it just sums up the mess Everton are in as a club.

But what is Everton’s loss is Villa’s gain because Digne has started life in B6 in a fantastic fashion.

Steven Gerrard has thrown him straight into the XI and benched the club’s previous number one, Matt Targett.

From an attacking perspective, there is no doubt that Digne is streets ahead of Targett.

But, from a defensive aspect, that’s where the Englishman can argue that he is better than Digne.

Either way, it now provides Villa with added quality in that left-back role and another layer in their quest to secure European football.

It might not happen this season, but the signs, ever since Gerrard arrived, are pretty positive for those in Claret and Blue.
