Tottenham Hotspur have one of the top strikers in the world, with Harry Kane in simply stunning form under Jose Mourinho.
However, the problem for Spurs for some time now has been finding a striker happy to be backup to Kane whilst also offering quality when needed.
Many strikers don’t fancy playing second fiddle to Kane, and Spurs have struggled to bring in quality cover for the England international as a result.
They have now managed to bring in a new striker, as Carlos Vinicius has arrived on loan from Benfica with a view to a permanent move – and he has shown some promising signs.
It’s now emerging that Tottenham had other strikers in mind, and one of them was Bayer Leverkusen striker Lucas Alario.
The 28-year-old, formerly of River Plate, has scored double figures in all three of his full seasons at Leverkusen, and put himself on Tottenham’s radar.
An Argentina international with three goals in eight caps, Alario was wanted by Mauricio Pochettino in 2016 according to TyC Sports – and Spurs seemingly looked to him again.
Agent Pedro Aldave has told TNT Sports that Tottenham wanted to sign Alario in the summer window, but it ‘didn’t work’ because the striker doesn’t want to just sit on the bench behind Kane.
“We had opportunities to go out on loan and he chose to stay…I believe that today Lucas can be in a top team. It is easier to make the leap from Argentina to a top team, on the other hand if you already came to Europe it is more difficult… we had the chance of Tottenham who is top, but to go look at the matches from the bench, it doesn’t work,” he added.
