Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has called for VAR to be scrapped after yet another major controversy in the Premier League.
The Reds lost 2-0 at home to Everton in last night’s Merseyside derby and there was huge contention of the award of a penalty.
Referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot in the final 10 minutes after Trent Alexander-Arnold was adjudged to have fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box but replays indicate that the Toffees attacker tripped over the Liverpool star, who was on the ground and had his back to the player.
Even after consulting the monitor, Kavanagh refused to reverse his decision and Everton went 2-0 ahead through Gylfi Sigurdsson.
A whole host of neutral fans and pundit have slated the decision and Lovren – who left Liverpool last summer – is no different.
Here’s how the Croatia international reacted on Twitter:
Lovren wasn’t the most popular player among Liverpool fans but it’s safe to say that the majority will absolutely back the Zenit St Petersburg powerhouse on this occasion.
Every week seems to throw up another VAR controversy and as much as it’s been brought in to improve football, you can’t help but feel it’s trivialising it.
