Dejan Lovren has been talking up Jurgen Klopp – but at Brendan Rodgers’ expense?
Dejan Lovren is hoping he can demonstrate a big improvement at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, and has been speaking positively about his new manager.
The Croatian told the Guardian he feels a big difference with the former Borussia Dortmund boss in charge, praising his man management skills.
Except the way he went out to describe Klopp’s attention to detail, comes across as a not so subtle dig at his old boss Brendan Rodgers.
Full of confidence after the 4-1 win over Manchester City, Lovren said: “It feels like two different teams.”
Speaking specifically about his new boss, he added: ““It is always easier when a manager has belief in your team and in yourself. It makes it much easier to play and gives you the confidence that, even if you make a mistake, afterwards he will talk to you and explain to you the wrong things and the good things.”
The suggestion is clear, he is getting the support he needs under Jurgen Klopp – and did not when Brendan Rodgers was manager.
That may be because Klopp has the confidence himself that he belongs at a club like Liverpool, rather than the false bravado that Rodgers seemed to possess.
As the pressure grew on him, it will have been more difficult to deal with Lovren’s under performance, and from the defender’s description, did not talk with him in the same manner as Klopp.
It is still early days under the German’s reign as manager, but Lovren has another chance and he needs to make the most of it to show he was worth the money Liverpool paid to Southampton two summers ago.
