The Michael Edwards replacement at Liverpool, Julian Ward, will now begin his reign as sporting director.
Saturday marked Edwards’s final game in the role as Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat by Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris.
Everybody knows the Reds’ transfer guru, but mostly by name.
Having masterminded many exceptional transfers at Anfield, be it arrivals or outgoings, this is someone who has become a cult figure among supporters of the Merseyside outfit.
But photographs of Edwards are few and far between but Theo Squires, a journalist for The Liverpool Echo, shared a rare picture of the man himself on stage at the fan park in Paris yesterday.
Edwards can be seen holding a drink and documenting the stunning scenes in the French capital as thousands of red shirts rallied the troops with pre-match songs.
This was always going to be a sad occasion for some Liverpool supporters no matter what happened on the pitch, because Edwards is leaving and being replaced by Ward, who has been promoted from within the Reds’ hierarchy rather than recruited from outside.
Even Steven Gerrard claimed on BT Sport last night that Edwards doesn’t get enough credit for the work he has overseen at the club, alongside Jurgen Klopp.
It’ll be fascinating to see how Ward fares as his successor but, having worked alongside Edwards, there’s every chance that the good work will continue on the transfer front.
