Being a no-nonsense powerhouse of a centre-back, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa isn’t noted for his finesse or technical ability on the field.
But he showed both in abundance 12 months ago, when the Villans snatched a 2-1 win over Watford in the final seconds.
Konsa, a £12 million signing in the summer of 2019, curled home from just inside the box on January 20 of last year, taking the roof off Villa Park.
What he didn’t know at the time was that his beautiful effort skimmed the boot of Tyone Mings and the goal was officially awarded to Konsa’s centre-back partner at Aston Villa.
Nevertheless, it was a memorable moment in an otherwise disappointing season for Dean Smith’s side last term, despite narrowly surviving relegation.
And here’s how Alan McInally reacted to a tweet on the anniversary of that goal:
The 23-year-old, who joined Aston Villa from Brentford, has two goals under his belt in what’s proving a much better season for Smith’s side this time around.
So far, Villa sit 11th in the Premier League table and have recorded just one less victory than champions Liverpool, who they beat 7-2 earlier in the campaign.
