Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after hearing what Graeme Jones had to say about Eddie Howe, who is set to be named as manager.

What’s the story?

Well, according to The Athletic, Howe is expected to sign a contract today, as he prepares to replace Steve Bruce on Tyneside.

The 43-year-old will sign a two-and-a-half year deal at St James’ Park.

When discussing Howe’s qualities, Jones said that managers can’t do things ‘part-time’ – some fans have taken this as a subtle dig at Bruce.

As quoted by the BBC, Jones said: “If you think you can come to Newcastle and do it part-time, you’re mistaken. It requires every ounce you have. He’s intense and has exceptional Premier League experience, so if that’s a route (the new owners) do go down, I’m sure he’s more than capable.”

In our view, that is hardly subtle. Bruce was known for giving the Newcastle players far too much time off.

As the Daily Mail revealed in March, Bruce scheduled six days off for the Magpies squad, despite serious relegation threats hanging over them.

The former Bournemouth boss is an impressive tactician, who perhaps doesn’t get enough credit for his work.

Howe took the Cherries from the brink of relegation in League Two to the Premier League, and managed to do so while playing attractive football.

As you can see below, Howe seems to be a far more demanding coach than Bruce, who appeared to adopt a very casual style.

Additionally, the Englishman has a point to prove, after his reputation took a knock following Bournemouth’s relegation.

Under new ownership, Newcastle also have plenty to prove, so the pair should be a good fit for each other.

For now, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about Jones’ comments on Howe…
