Newcastle United beat Southampton despite going down to 10 men on Tuesday to reach the semi-final of the Carabao Cup – and both John Terry and Peter Crouch shared their admiration of the club, and the St. James Park atmosphere.
In the midst of deadline day, Newcastle and Southampton had the small matter of fighting for a place in the first final of the season. Joelinton had given The Toon a first-leg lead, but it was a close encounter and Che Adams had chances.
The atmosphere was incredible ahead of kick-off, and North Shields-born Sean Longstaff duly delivered. His first, a perfect finish across Gavin Bazunu after five minutes. Neat play from Joe Willock and Miguel Almiron set his second up.
Not long into the second leg and the Toon were 3-0 up. Nick Pope, though, did then concede his first goal in more than 15 hours – Adams finally getting the better of him with a gorgeous effort. Bruno Guimaraes was shown a red card.
But Newcastle held on to reach the final where they take on either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest. United have a 3-0 lead from the first leg. Both Terry and Crouch took to Twitter after the win to share their Toon appreciation.
Terry and Crouch share admiration of Newcastle after Carabao Cup win
It is a huge moment in the club’s history. The club’s first final since 1999. Eddie Howe is producing magic and while he does have help in the transfer market, he is still signing the right players. The right personalities to keep the family feel.
Newcastle have become nearly impenetrable at the back, unless it is a seriously breathtaking goal – Adams’ strike was technically incredible. In attack, numerous players are scoring goals. They look good for the top four – and a trophy.
