Speaking on The Overlap, Gary Neville has been discussing Leeds United’s chances of staying up.

The pundit says that he wasn’t sure that Leeds could be able to stay up last season, so he can’t be sure that they will this time around.

Neville touched on Leeds’ form last term, describing their time under Marcelo Bielsa during the previous campaign as a ‘shambles’, stating that things got very ugly under the Argentine towards the end of his reign.

Shambolic

Neville discussed Leeds’ chances of staying up and the problems they had under Bielsa last season.

“I wasn’t sure last season so I can’t be sure no. Under Bielsa to be honest with you, I know we all love him, but it was a shambles wasn’t it. When it was going wrong it was just ‘oh’,” Neville said.

Had to make a change

Leeds United as a club and as a fanbase were totally enamoured by Marcelo Bielsa, but the fact that they felt they had to make a change last season tells you all you need to know.

Whether it was injury problems, burnout or just being figured out tactically, Bielsa’s style was no longer working in the Premier League, and his Leeds team were being battered on almost a weekly basis.

Liverpool and Manchester City both scored buckets of goals against the Whites, while Spurs shipped four in the Argentine’s final game in charge of the club.

To describe those final months at Leeds as a ‘shambles’ would be accurate. Leeds were all over the place at that point and they, quite simply, couldn’t defend.

The defensive side of things has certainly improved slightly under Jesse Marsch, but the Whites still have a long way to go to get back to where they want to be.
