The Independent revealed yesterday that Tottenham Hotspur were closing in on a deal to sign Wolves’ Matt Doherty this summer.
The report claims that Wolverhampton Wanderers are holding out for £20 million but Spurs are expected to close a deal for a fee less than that in the coming days.
Doherty has been one of Wolves’ most important players in the Premier League since their promotion. The Irishman has played 75 times in the top-flight so far and his attacking output is hugely impressive for a defender.
The 28-year-old has scored eight goals and has provided 11 assists in the last two years in the league, and it no surprise that Tottenham are interested in signing him this summer.
However, Doherty’s tweets from seven years ago have come to light since the rumours about a move to Tottenham emerged, and some Spurs fans might not like it.
The Wolves star is a massive fan of a North London club but, sadly for Spurs fans, it is not the Tottenham side. Doherty has expressed his love for Arsenal on Twitter before and fans have found two of his tweets from a while ago.
Tottenham have a few Arsenal fans in their squad already
If the move does go through, Doherty won’t be the first Gunners fan in the Spurs squad. Harry Kane and Serge Aurier have been pictured in Arsenal kits in the past, while Moussa Sissoko has admitted before that he grew up supporting Tottenham’s arch-rivals (Daily Mail).
All three have played a big part for Tottenham over the years and Doherty would be no different. Spurs are desperate to sign a new right-back and the Wolves star would be a fantastic addition.
His game is a lot more balanced than that of Aurier and he has shown over the last two years that he can have a bigger impact than the Ivorian at both ends of the pitch.
Arsenal fans will bring up the fact that he supported them regularly but, if he performs even half as good Kane has, Spurs supporters will have the last laugh.
