‘Lots of pace’: PL man hails reported Celtic target; says he’s ‘very talented’

Charlton Athletic youngster and reported Celtic target Alfie Doughty is a ‘very talented’ player with pace to burn, former Addicks teammate Josh Cullen has told West Ham’s official website.

With third-tier Charlton due to take on Premier League opposition in the EFL Cup second round tonight, one of the most exciting prospects outside the top flight has the perfect opportunity to add a few more pounds on to his price-tag.

The Glasgow Evening Times reports that Celtic have already had two bids – the second worth up to £700,000 – rejected for a man who is out of contract next summer.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer admitted that the Scottish champions had scouted Doughty during the EFL Cup first round earlier this month (London News Online).

And you can guarantee that Celtic will be keeping a close eye on how the 20-year-old performs against a higher standard of opposition at the London Stadium.

Cullen, the West Ham midfielder who shared a dressing room with Doughty during a loan spell at Charlton, only has good things to say about a player who is rapidly going from strength to strength.

“Charlton have got some very talented players in their squad, even if a number of senior lads have left since the end of last season,” said Cullen, who also hailed striker Macauley Bonne and goalkeeper Dillon Phillips.

“Alfie Doughty is another one. He’s a left wing-back with lots of pace. He’s a direct player and is still only 20 so he’s a good young talent.”

Doughty’s versatility is another reason why he is so highly thought of on both sides of the border.

Since breaking into Bowyer’s starting XI a few months back, this most adaptable of speed-machines has shone at left-wing and at left-back, while scoring his first goal of the new season from a right-sided role on Saturday.
