The Spurs man is ‘not good enough’ for the German side if he’s not good enough for the Tottenham Hotspur Arena, the Sky Germany pundit has claimed.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen has been criticised by Bayern Munich and Germany legend Lothar Matthaus, who has deemed the Spurs man “too slow” for the Bundesliga side as well as suggesting that he would be a substitute at the Allianz Arena, as reported by Sport1.
Eriksen has failed to agree to a new contract with Tottenham and, as things stand, he will be able to leave Spurs for free next summer, as well as being able to speak to teams outside of England as early as January regarding a pre-contract agreement.
Amid rumours suggesting Bayern could be one of Eriksen’s possible destinations, Matthaus made his feelings very clear in conversation with German outlet Sport1.
“I’ve been following the player for a long time and so far in 2019 he has disappointed me,” said the Sky Germany pundit. “A transfer to FC Bayern wouldn’t make sense in my view, and would be very surprising. If he’s not enough for Tottenham, he’s not good enough for Bayern. Uli Hoeness has also said before that Bayern doesn’t need any substitutes.
“Eriksen is a fine technician, a typical No 10. But he’s too slow, and Niko Kovac likes fast players. For me, Eriksen is not the kind of player who makes all the difference at the highest level, so concentrate on the transfer of Kai Havertz next summer, and you still have Philippe Coutinho, who plays well as a 10.”
The £75,000-per-week (Spotrac) man’s poor form has been one of several frustrating points for Tottenham fans this season – just one goal and one assist from 11 Spurs games in all competitions (Transfermarkt) – on top of the team having had a poor start to the new campaign.
