West Ham United could be about to pip Everton to Paulo Fonseca.
Everton ended their season with a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United on Sunday afternoon, and they may face defeat at the hands of the Hammers again – even though the season is over.
The Toffees served up another disappointing display under Sam Allardyce with defeat at the London Stadium, and the expectation is that Allardyce will be sacked in the coming days.
As reported by the Daily Mail earlier this year, Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca had emerged as the top target to replace Allardyce, with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri thought to be a big fan.
Now though, The Mirror report that Fonseca has been in London this week for talks with West Ham United, as the Portuguese boss considers making a shock move to replace David Moyes.
Fonseca, 45, won a domestic double in his first campaign as Shakhtar boss last season, and is set for another league title this term, whilst he even guided his side to the last 16 of the Champions League this season.
Formerly of Porto, Pacos de Ferreira and Braga, Fonseca has been an exciting manager with an attractive brand of football in his 4-2-3-1 setup, and many Everton fans felt he was the man to bring some light back to the club after a dark season.
Now though, Everton face losing out on Fonseca to West Ham, and whilst the Hammers do have their selling points, it would be a bitter pill to swallow for the ambitious Toffees.
Everton finished above West Ham and, thanks to Moshiri’s investment, have more money to spend, but a lack of direction has held them back. Losing out to a team like Arsenal or Chelsea would be one thing, but losing out on a top managerial target to West Ham – a bottom half team who have been in chaos at times this season – would be difficult to accept for fans and for Moshiri, who invested two years ago to take the club forward, not tread water behind West Ham.
