Losing Doucoure race to Liverpool may have one upside for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur target Abdoulaye Doucoure recently suggested that it was his dream to play for Liverpool.

Tottenham’s hopes of signing Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure appeared to take something of a hit last week when the 25-year-old told French station Canal Plus that it was his dream to play for Liverpool in the future.

The Sun reported last month that Spurs, the Reds and Arsenal were all vying for Doucoure’s signature as he continued to impress during his second season with the Hornets.

Doucoure – who scored one goal in all competitions last season – has found the back of the net seven times in the top flight this term, so it is little surprise that three of the Premier League’s heavyweights are eyeing a move.

And while Mauricio Pochettino may now feel that he is fighting an uphill battle with the former France under-21 international’s heart seemingly set on a move to Anfield, there may perhaps be one upside for Spurs if they ultimately miss out on the Hornets ace, who the Daily Star reports is rated at £40 million.

The Daily Mail reported last month that Liverpool were eyeing an ambitious move for Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama as they brace themselves to lose Emre Can when his contract expires in the summer.

With Naby Keita set to finally arrive on Merseyside at the end of the campaign, it seems possible that Jurgen Klopp may only need one more midfield enforcer. And if that ends up being Doucoure, Liverpool will surely have no need to go after Wanyama also.

While Wanyama may have little intention of making a move to the Reds anyway, quashing any speculation would undoubtedly be a boost for Pochettino as he looks to build on the further promise that they have shown this year.

And even if Wanyama becomes Liverpool’s priority target in that area of the pitch, at least Spurs would potentially then have a clearer run at signing Doucoure if they needed it.
