Tim Sherwood thinks Leeds United should have been awarded a penalty before Liverpool put six goals past them at Anfield on Wednesday night, as he told Premier League Productions (23/02/22 at 10:30 pm).

At 0-0, Sherwood felt that Alisson Becker ‘ lost control’ of the ball and, as a result, the Liverpool shot-stopper ended up fouling the Leeds forward in the penalty area.

Virgil van Dijk played a simple ball back to his keeper, with James hunting it down, but his heavy touch landed in the path of his opponent and he was brought down as Alisson tried to recover the ball.

Either way, nothing was given by the on-field referee, nor VAR, as Leeds then went on to concede two penalties themselves and six goals in total.

Nonetheless, this is what Sherwood made of Alisson’s actions yesterday at Anfield and how he was seemingly fortunate.

“Alisson loses control of it,” said Sherwood. “James then knicks it, I think the replay shows that it comes off the heel of Alisson.

“But, on his follow-through, with his left leg, he clearly touches James in the penalty area and it’s a penalty.”

In truth, even if Leeds had been awarded the penalty, it probably wouldn’t have done much because of the form both sides are in.

Liverpool are smoking teams everywhere they go because they have so many in-form attacking stars thriving.

Whilst Leeds simply can’t stop picking the ball out of their own net – and proof of that is their 16 goals conceded from their last four matches.

It’s a lot worse than that because they have conceded 56 goals in total this term – more than anyone else in the division – and more than what they shipped last term.

That form just stinks of relegation and it doesn’t bode well for the Yorkshire club’s hopes of staying in England’s top-flight.
