Loris Karius discusses areas he has been working on despite injury

The Liverpool summer signing has been working on areas he can while being sidelined with a broken hand.

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has admitted he has still been working on areas of his game despite being sidelined with a broken hand.

The German, who signed from Mainz in the summer, sustained the injury during a pre-season tour of the United States when he collided with Dejan Lovren in attempt to clear a set-piece.

It has not stopped Karius working on one particular area of his game, as he told the club’s official website: “I’ve been outside every day with the team and have done a lot of fitness work, foot work and making some saves with my left hand.

“My fitness level is where it should be, I don’t think I am going to need any time to improve on that, so that will help me to be fit by the time I feel confident with my hand.

“We haven’t wasted any time there, in fact we’ve probably even improved me on some stuff. We did a lot of kicking with John Achterberg – after every training session we did work to improve on kicking, so I feel really good.”

Given how Liverpool have started the season, it is evident that the goalkeeper playing with the ball at his feet is a key issue – it is one of the areas Simon Mignolet, who is unchallenged as the regular starting keeper while Karius is sidelined, struggles with.

A lot of the criticism that is levelled at Mignolet is because of his distribution, that he struggles to kick beyond the halfway line, and sometimes does not find his man with the ball when playing it out.

Whenever Karius is handed his opportunity to stake his claim to be first-choice goalkeeper, his passing accuracy and ensuring the side keep hold of possession are going to be areas which will be looked at, as well as doing what is normally expected from a goalkeeper in doing his best to preserve a clean sheet. In all of those areas, they will want better numbers than what Mignolet has produced so far to justify him being number one.

It seems that Karius is raring to go, and has kept himself in shape so he can make his full Liverpool debut as soon as possible. A lot of people are hoping that the 23-year-old could establish himself as club’s number one goalkeeper for many years to come.
