Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has told the Liverpool Echo that his rivalry with Simon Mignolet is a healthy one.

The German made the move to Anfield this summer as manager Jurgen Klopp looked to add to his goalkeeping options.

It was felt he has been brought to the club as a direct replacement for Mignolet, who once again came in for criticism for his performances last season.

It certainly seems that is the case; with Klopp electing to drop Mignolet in favour of Karius for the weekend win over Hull City.

The Belgian is likely to be upset at losing his place but Karius says the competition between the two is currently a healthy one.

“That competition with Simon is good,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“I think it is positive for us and for the club that we know we have to be at our best to play otherwise there will be another strong keeper who is waiting.

“It is really healthy competition and we don’t have anything against each other. We try to help each other in training and we get on okay so there is no issue between us.”

Liverpool's Simon Mignolet looks dejected after conceding a goal

Mignolet may feel hard done by at the moment after starting this season relatively well, but he can hardly be surprised given his performances in recent years.

Last season alone he committed the second highest defensive errors leading to goals of any ‘keeper in the division.

In fact, since arriving at the club in 2013 no goalkeeper has made more mistakes leading to goals than the Belgium in the Premier League.

That shows this change was a long time coming and it remains to be seen how long he will stay at Anfield after losing his place.
