Lorient fans react after their side confirm Leeds option to buy Illan Meslier

Meslier moved to Leeds United on a season-long loan deal yesterday.

Some Lorient fans are unhappy at the prospect of losing Illan Meslier permanently to Leeds United.

Meslier completed a season-long loan move from Lorient to Leeds ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline for clubs in England’s top two divisions.

But while the Whites’ official statement failed to mention any option to buy the player outright, that of Les Merlus did.

And this is the response from those of a Lorient persuasion on Twitter…

Je me dis que c’est une bonne chose que Meslier parte à Leeds (bien sûr si l’option d’achat n’est pas levé) car avec Casilla ou Nardi en numéro 1 c’est pas la même chose et il apprendra bcp plus avec Casilla que Nardi et y a bcp plus de matchs en championship que en L2 ️⚫

Meslier played 28 times in the French second tier last season, his first at senior level.

The 19-year-old is expected to compete with Kiko Casilla at Leeds, and could be rivalled by Kamil Miazek, Will Huffer or Harrison Male below him.

He replaces Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who left to join Burnley at the start of this month.

It is unclear how much Leeds would have to pay for Meslier, who has three years left on his Lorient contract and a Transfermarkt valuation of €5 million (around £4.6m).
