Lorenzo Amoruso has told The Scottish Sun that it was wise of Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha to sign Bruno Alves in the summer transfer window.

Rangers recently competed the signing of Alves following the defender’s departure from Italian club Cagliari at the end of the 2016-17 season.

The 35-year-old centre-back is past his best, but in his prime the Portugal international defender was one of the best players in his position in the world.

Alves won the European Championship in 2016 in France with Portugal and is also part of Fernando Santos’s squad at the ongoing 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Former Rangers defender Amoruso, who is now 45 years of age, has praised manager Caixinha for signing the ex-FC Porto and Zenit Saint Petersburg star.

“He is a strong defender,” Amoruso told The Scottish Sun about Alves. “He is very good in the air and I think he will enjoy the physical nature of Scottish football.

“His experience will be vital for Rangers. They need someone strong at the back and he is a leader. Bruno has been at top clubs in his career and he will be a big influence inside the dressing-room.

“The players will look up to him and I think it was a wise move from Caixinha to sign him. Bruno will help in terms of communication too. He will be able to get the manager’s message across.”

Alves will bring with him a lot of experience and European pedigree, and he is certainly a very good signing for Rangers.

The signing of the centre-back has enhanced the quality of the current Gers’ squad, and the Ibrox outfit are now better equipped to challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.
