Lord Sugar believes that Tottenham players should not join any of their rival clubs this summer.

Former Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Lord Alan Sugar, says that the club is in a strong position to keep hold of their star players.

Spurs finished second in the Premier League this season, and they are heading in the right direction under Mauricio Pochettino.

Lord Sugar believes that the club’s gradual progress, a new state-of-the-art stadium (2018-19 season) and Champions League football should be enough to keep hold of key players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

The business tycoon says that previously star players used to ditch Tottenham for Champions League football elsewhere. Now, Spurs can provide that platform to their players.

He adds that the only reason why players might want to leave the north London club would be if the rich Premier League clubs offer twice the wages. Sugar believes that it is the job of the manager to convince his players to stay put.

The 70-year-old takes Manchester United as an example, saying The Red Devils have not demonstrated their quality as compared to what they were under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He also adds that Champions Chelsea are “very up and down”, citing their last season’s poor performance to back up his claim.

“I don’t see any excuse for any of our players leaving. To go where? Where would they go? Manchester United? They’re a good club of course but this year and the year before they didn’t really demonstrate that they were what they were when Sir Alex was in charge,” Lord Sugar told BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek.

“Chelsea, they’re very up and down. They’ve got a new manager now but they’ve had periods when they haven’t performed either. So much so that last year the anomaly was that Leicester were able to take advantage of the misfortune of all the top clubs that weren’t really playing their top performance.”

Recently, Kyle Walker has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane. While Champions League can be a major attractive factor behind a players’ decision to stay put, the lure of doubling or tripling the wages can be too tempting to reject outright.
