West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon scores against Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur were left frustrated on Saturday afternoon, as they could only muster a 1-1 home draw with managerless West Bromwich Albion.
Spurs recovered from their North London defeat to Arsenal by beating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, and many expected them to coast to victory over West Brom, who sacked manager Tony Pulis just days ago.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men were subsequently stunned early on at Wembley Stadium, as Salomon Rondon capitalised on hesitant defending from Davinson Sanchez to put the Baggies in front.
Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur equalises against West Brom
Caretaker boss Gary Megson unsurprisingly had his side sit in and defend with a view to counter-attacking, leaving Spurs frustrated for much of the game as chances came and went.
However, Spurs did hit back in the second half, as Dele Alli’s cross was turned home by Harry Kane from close range, giving Tottenham hope of a late winner.
Instead, West Brom almost stole all three points, as Rondon narrowly put his shot wide from a superb Matt Phillips cross, leaving the two sides to share the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

During the game, former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar took to Twitter to suggest that it was like West Brom had 50 players in their own box, as they were blocking every Tottenham shot, cross or pass as they defended for their lives.
Sugar also suggested that it was two points dropped rather than one point gained, which will be the general consensus given the aspirations of the two sides – but Rondon’s late chance could’ve left Spurs empty-handed.
