Paul Merson has claimed that Martin Odegaard is looking ‘world-class’ for Arsenal this season, as he told Sky Sports Premier League.
The double-winner added that the 23-year-old is currently playing ‘at the top of his game’ for the Gunners.
Arsenal would have been disappointed and deflated by their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday night, but fans will be well aware that their fight isn’t with Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Mikel Arteta and his players need to showcase their worth from the teams outside of the top three and, at this moment in time, they are ticking that box.
A player like Odegaard has played an integral part of that and been key to why the club could be heading back to the Champions League.
The former Real Madrid man was lauded by Merson yesterday, as he made quite the claim about the player.
“Odegaard is playing at the top of his game and looks world-class,” said Merson. “I just think Odegaard is the massive difference (in the midfield).
“He is an intellgent footballer. He finds space. I know Xhaka is on the other side, but it’s all Odegaard, in my opinion. He runs with the ball. He knows when to go, doesn’t rush into space and is a top-draw player.”
It was an evening to forget for Odegaard last night, as Liverpool, in the end, proved to be too powerful for the north London club.
But that doesn’t hide the fact that, since his move from Real Madrid, Odegaard has been on a different level.
When he first joined on-loan from the Spanish giants, the Norway international was splitting opinion.
But that’s no longer the case because his form, in those pockets, is keeping Arsenal’s top-scorer – Emile Smith Rowe – out of the XI.
