Leicester City have had an incredible season in the Premier League, but the way they ended the campaign will still pain them. For a large part of the season, it looked certain that the Foxes would finish in the top three.

Just four wins in their last 17 games pushed them out of the Champions League places. However, a fifth-placed finish is still an extraordinary achievement by Brendan Rodgers’ side.

With a Europa League campaign ahead of them, Leicester will need to strengthen their squad. Caglar Soyuncu was phenomenal for Leicester last season, but the Foxes need someone just as good to partner him at the back.

Rodgers’ side were very close to completing a £26 million deal for Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard in January. The Foxes were linked with a move for the Dane again last month, with his price reportedly dropping to £15 million (Goal).

Vestergaard spoke to Ekstra Bladet about his future and the Southampton man hinted that he might stay at St. Mary’s because of how exciting Ralph Hasenhuttl’s project is.

He said: “I know that there is interest from clubs in Spain, just as there is from England, but I can not comment on specific clubs. It is always a pat on the back to be mentioned in connection with other strong clubs, but Southampton’s project now also looks exciting.

“We have something unique in terms of the way we defend and push, and it has taken time to make it work. It was seen after the break that we can now dominate matches and be a really good team in the Premier League. It is a game development that I welcome, and I think that an exciting season awaits the club.”

Southampton recovered brilliantly after a disastrous start in the Premier League. The Saints lost just once in their last nine games which helped them finish 11th in the table; a position nobody expected them to secure.

Vestergaard started each of their last three games and looked really impressive. A move to a Europa League side is tempting, but Southampton’s project under Hasenhuttl really is exciting, and the Dane might just stick with the Saints for another year.
