One of the most refreshing things about Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign at Tottenham Hotspur so far has been Steven Bergwijn’s form.
The Dutch winger joined Spurs in January of 2020 and scored on his debut against Manchester City, enjoying a perfect start to life in England.
But for the rest of his Tottenham career under Jose Mourinho, he was decidely average and you could tell that his confidence was suffering.
Since that goal against City, the former PSV attacker has netted only three times in all competitions for the Lilywhites, illustrating his dip in form.
But he’s very much on an upswing under Nuno and has started all three of Tottenham’s Premier League games this season – all wins – and has been rewarded with a return to the Netherlands’ national side as a result of his form.
On Saturday, the Oranje hammered Montenegro 4-0 and Bergwijn came on with 13 minutes to go, producing a fine cameo that included skill and a bit of incisive running, albeit against a tiring and beaten defence.
And here’s how Twitter reacted to the cameo:
Big potential
If Bergwijn – a £25 million signing from PSV – could work on his finishing, he’d be an exceptional asset to the North Londoners.
He gets himself in some great positions, as he demonstrated against Pep Guardiola’s side on the opening day of the season.
But one thing that hasn’t improved about the player under Nuno yet is a wastefulness in front of goal, also evident against City, and that’s the one thing holding him back just right now.
