The winless streak stretched to seven games for Wigan after a 1-0 defeat to Preston North End on Friday Night.
The return to the Championship has not gone smoothly for Gary Caldwell’s men.
They currently sit rock bottom after nine games, but if you look a bit deeper, it is not all doom and gloom. The Latics have been competitive in every fixture they have played losing by the lone goal in each of their six defeats.
Wigan Athletic’s Adam Bogdan at full time
While that can get tiresome after a period of time, it shows that the players are not dropping their heads and are still giving their all for the cause.
Their home form has been credible, only conceding two goals in their four games and picking up all their points for the season at the DW Stadium. Clearly though, they need to strike a balance between their home and away results and getting a few scrappy points on the road can be like gold and the difference between survival and relegation.
Will Grigg celebrates scoring the first goal for Wigan Athletic
They also need to find support for Will Grigg, who is their only multiple goal scorer this season with four goals. A player such as Nick Powell for example has the capability to chip in with his fair share from midfield and the same applies to the experienced Jordi Gomez who returned to the club in August after stints at Sunderland and Blackburn.
On Tuesday night they play Wolves, a opponent which has blown hot and cold over the early part of the season.
They beat Brentford 3-1 on Saturday which came on the back of their impressive win at Newcastle, and therefore come into the clash with a great degree of confidence.
However Wolves know full well there is no easy game in the Championship, and Wigan will all too happily seize on any opportunity if they are not fully focussed.
I see positive signs for Wigan in this clash but they will just fall short of claiming the elusive three points.
