Tottenham were so good in the opening part of Sunday’s clash against West Ham that they looked like genuine title contenders.

The way they defended the 3-0 lead that opening 45 wracked up indicates why many might feel they’re still a long way off being in that conversation.

So how did the players view it? Speaking to the club’s official website, Ben Davies was keen to emphasise the positives in the first half display.

That said, he was also keen to ensure a similar collapse doesn’t happen again, after West Ham turned 3-0 into 3-3 in the closing minutes of the match.

“That was tough to take. When we were in the situation we were in, we shouldn’t just be coming away with a point, but there are lessons to be learned there. We have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

“We scored three amazing goals and we’re playing some good football, creating chances and it’s about maintaining that, looking at the positives as well.

“It’s also about sticking together and next time, make sure we see games out better.”

Davies was an unused substitute for the match, with Sergio Reguilon getting the nod at left back.

That increased competition for places may mean Davies has to get more of his minutes in the Europa League for the time being.

Spurs kick off their campaign against LASK tomorrow night, and will be favourites for the win.

If Jose Mourinho is looking for more solidity, Davies’ more defensive style may get him a look-in ahead of new-boy Reguilon.

The Welshman is also right to look at the positives; a crazy finish to the game shouldn’t diminish Spurs’ first half display.
