Jamie Carragher has said on Sky Sports Premier League (8:33pm, April 16, 2021) that Everton were lucky to earn the penalty against Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton are taking on Tottenham at Goodison Park in the Premier League this evening.

Spurs took the lead in the 27th minute through England international striker Harry Kane, but the Toffees restored parity on 31 minutes from the penalty spot.

Sergio Reguilon was adjudged to have brought down James Rodriguez inside the box, and former Spurs midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher is on co-commentary duty for the match, and the Sky Sports pundit believes that Everton were lucky to be awarded the penalty.

Carragher has said on Sky Sports Premier League (8:33pm, April 16, 2021): “I think they might be a bit fortunate, Everton, I really do.

“When I saw Reguilon coming behind Rodriguez, I thought there was going to be a tangle, there was going to be a coming-together here. I wasn’t surprised when the penalty was given and the referee blew the whistle, but looking at it again, it didn’t seem that there was anything there.”

Controversial decision

It was a controversial decision, and it will be interesting to see how the game pans out in the second half.

If Everton go on to win the Premier League game, then one should not be surprised if Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho complains about the decision and points to that incident as the reason behind his side’s defeat at Goodison Park.
