‘Looking after himself’: Tim Sherwood sends warning to Tottenham man about his future

Tim Sherwood has told Optus Sport on Premier League League Productions that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is only ‘looking after himself’.

The TV pundit also claimed if Mourinho doesn’t deliver Champion League football at the end of the season then Spurs will be ‘having a new manager’.

Despite the win against Aston Villa on Sunday, the pain of crashing out in the Europa League is still being felt in North London.

And Sherwood warned Mourinho that he now has to use Tottenham’s Premier League run-in as an opportunity to deliver top-four for Spurs.

“If they manage to finish in the top four and win the League Cup then it has been a fantastic season,” said Sherwood. “Look at the games coming up, the Newcastle game, they are fighting for their lives but I expect them to win.

“Manchester United, they have to beat. They have to beat the teams in and around them. Everton as well. And then they go to Leicester in the final game of the season.

“If Jose drops out of the top four and he doesn’t qualify for the Europa League and he doesn’t win the League Cup then Tottenham are having a new manager.

“Well, what else do they do? The objective is to finish in the Champions League. If they’re not in it then there is a problem.

“These boys have been used to getting cuddled by a manager in Pochettino. And whatever they did bad, he would look after them. Mourinho’s not looking after them. He’s looking after himself. He will start throwing these boys under the bus. If he feels like they are not producing the goods, like Jose demands then he will let everyone know about it.”

It will be interesting to see what the feeling around Spurs will be like if the club finish outside of the top-four but win the League Cup.

If that happens then, in terms of success, he has done better than the previously lauded Mauricio Pochettino.

But in today’s game, finishing in the top-four is seen more of success than winning a League Cup, which is why such competitions are being devalued.
