Arsenal are reportedly on the brink of cutting Lucas Torreira loose – and Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter are surprised by it.
According to The Times, Arsenal are ‘on the brink’ of loaning the Uruguay international to Fiorentina.
Torreira, who scored in his first North London derby against Tottenham, struggled for regular football after coming back from injury during Project Restart.
When the season finished last month, Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos – who is reportedly set to re-sign on another loan – were firmly the Gunners’ first-choice pairing in midfield.
The 24-year-old had a rip-roaring first season at the Emirates Stadium following a £26 million move from Sampdoria two years ago during Unai Emery’s reign, but the South American’s form tailed off last term, even before his injury in March.
But even some Spurs supporters on social media are surprised by the idea that Edu is set to offload him.
Here’s how they reacted on Twitter:
It is quite surprising that Arsenal are set to lose money on this investment, by virtue of how good he looked during the 2018-19 campaign.
The Times added that the North Londoners would get a £7.1 million loan fee, and then another £14.2 million next summer if the Italians take up their option to sign him.
Regardless of how the financial landscape looks in football, it’s a loss of around £5 million and Tottenham fans are right to raise an eyebrow.
