Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton does not think Tottenham Hotspur winger Dejan Kulusevski was at his best in his side’s 2-2 draw with Brentford last weekend.

Tottenham signed Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus permanently in June after a successful loan spell in north London, but he was unable to help guide his team to all three points in their season opener.

Speaking about Spurs and the 23-year-old on Fantasy 606, Sutton said: “The thing about Spurs, they’re going to play this way, attack, attack, attack. I had Kulusevski in [fantasy football], who looked a little bit off it.”

While Kulusevski was unable to make much of an impact at the Gtech Community Stadium, James Maddison was quite an influential figure on his debut for the club.

The attacking midfielder was at the heart of what Spurs managed to do well on the day, playing a part in both goals.

Tottenham will need more from Dejan Kulusevski

Following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, Ange Postecoglou will be relying on the likes of Kulusevski, Maddison and Son Heung-min.

The Sweden international may not have had his best game, but he is still a very dangerous wide man who is capable of making things happen.

For example, in his first 18 Premier League matches for Tottenham, Kulusevski scored five goals and provided seven assists.

It is the kind of form Postecoglou will be desperate for the £110,000-a-week (Spotrac) attacker to show.

If he can and Son starts finding the back of the net on a consistent basis again, then it should give Spurs a chance in the race for Champions League football this term. If not, then it could be another disappointing campaign for the north London outfit.

Ultimately, with Kane gone, Kulusevski and the rest of Spurs’ attackers are going to need to step up.
