Michael Owen has praised Guglielmo Vicario for his strong showing during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday night.

Previously, the former England striker spoke about how Guglielmo Vicario ‘looked a little bit nervous’ when he made his Tottenham debut against Brentford on the opening day of the new Premier League season.

But Owen thinks Guglielmo Vicario is looking far better now and how he was ‘absolutely brilliant’ against Fulham last night, as he told Premier League Productions (23/10/23 at 10:15 pm).

On a number of occasions, he denied an error-prone Fulham team from, either opening the scoring or trying to get back into the match in the second half.

Whilst there is a lot of talk about the style of play under Ange Postecoglou and how Spurs are now playing on the front foot – Jermain Defoe thinks Son Heung-min is a ‘dream’ to play with for the Spurs players.

The defence has also performed admirably, with Guglielmo Vicario securing four clean sheets from his nine matches (transfermarkt), as Tottenham sit at the top of the Premier League table.

And Michael Owen was now sure to give the Italian his flowers, despite his previous comments about him.

Another clean sheet for Guglielmo Vicario

“I must admit, didn’t we watch him against Brentford and I thought ‘do you look a little bit nervous?’” said Owen.

“I thought he looked nervous. Not that he made any mistakes. I just thought, the ball with his feet. It’s absolutely fine to be nervous in your first game.

“But, since then, wow, he has been absolutely brilliant. Together with a lot of these new players, they have bedded in very well.”

From Hugo Lloris to Guglielmo Vicario

On one hand, Vicario had big shoes to fill when he was handed Tottenham’s number one jersey, but on the other, he didn’t.

Hugo Lloris was Tottenham’s skipper and still is their longest-serving player given that he didn’t leave in the summer – it has been suggested that some things have become ‘awkward’ in the dressing room with Lloris.

The recently-retired France international put in many, many great performances in a Spurs shirt, in terms of longevity, and that is a hard thing to follow for Vicario.

But, based on last season, it’s not because Lloris was far too error-prone and needed replacing.
