Paco Alcacer is in remarkable form since moving to the Bundesliga with Dortmund, but he was linked with a move to Premier League Southampton earlier in the year.
Paco Alcacer clearly needed a fresh start this summer after two years stuck in the Barcelona bench.
According to El Mundo Deportivo, Southampton had enquired about the £30 million Spaniard. As you will no doubt be aware, however, The Saints missed out on the Barca bench-warmer. Alcacer instead moved to Borussia Dortmund, who signed him on loan with an option to buy next year for £25 million.
And with Southampton struggling from a lack of goals and seemingly being sucked into a Premier League relegation battle, Alcacer suddenly looks like their missing link.
The former Valencia man has had a quite amazing start to life in Germany after all. He has scored six goals in just 81 minutes of action, spread across three substitute appearances in the Bundesliga, including a hat-trick in Saturday’s thrilling 4-3 win against FC Augsburg.
Currently, Alcacer is averaging a goal every 13.5 minutes of Bundesliga football with his stunning free-kick against Augsburg showing that he’s more than just the penalty-box poacher who scored goals at a decent rate in Valencia.
And he has transferred this form to the international stage too. Alcacer hit two more clinical goals as Spain cruised to a 4-1 friendly win away at Wales on Thursday night.
If only Mark Hughes could call on a striker this potent.
