‘Look at that’: Keown floored by what £36m Liverpool player did tonight

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate powered his side ahead against Benfica in the Champions League tonight.

The towering Frenchman rose above everyone else to power a header into the back of the net on 21 minutes.

Konate, a £36 million signing from RB Leipzig last summer, also scored in the 3-1 victory in Portugal last Tuesday during the first leg of this quarter-final.

And Martin Keown, a legendary central defender, couldn’t speak highly enough about Konate’s goal, noting that he looked ‘disinterested’ just before springing to life in the corner.

He said live on BT Sport: “That’s an absolute brilliant header. It looks almost like he was disinterested and suddenly changes gear and attacks it at the highest point. Look at that. Climbs higher than everyone else. He’s just physically dominant, soars over the top of his opponents.”

Big guns

Goncalo Gomes fired the Portuguese side back on level terms, casually slamming past Alisson following an element of good fortune which saw him one-on-one with the Liverpool goalkeeper.

That Gomes goal came after Darwin Nunez had a brilliant equaliser chalked off for offside.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp named a weakened first XI, with Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City looming large, but the German might need to unleash some of his bigger guns, like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, eventually.

Liverpool, who are poised to face Villarreal in the semi-final, are only two goal concessions away from this tie being level on aggregate and with Benfica playing well, everything is to play for during the second 45 minutes.
